What advice would you give to students going abroad? I would recommend taking any pre-seminar courses and prep seriously enough that you can get something out of it. For London, the “Mapping London” class really introduced me to the perfect amount of politics, history, culture, and lingo to make me feel confident about being a short-term citizen of a country I’d only ever spent 2 days in. Also, I highly recommend planning on going to school-organized events outside of your schedule such as Town Hall Tuesdays for the London program! These events were a great opportunity to meet students in different majors, develop a relationship with professors and staff, hear about opportunities and things that are going on, and get lunches provided by different local restaurants!

What was your most valuable experience abroad? The best experience in my host country was the general aspect of living in London. I had never lived anywhere else besides Syracuse, so this was my first time truly experiencing life in another city and being so far away from home. London is such an incredible place with so much to do and see. I loved exploring all of the diverse cultural and tourist attractions such as the museums, galleries, markets, etc. I learned many life skills such as how to budget expenses and became comfortable using public transportation.

What advice would you give to a student studying abroad? Do research on the different neighborhoods in London! There are countless different restaurants/stores/museums/outings that can fit almost ANYONE. There is so much to see, and the architecture is so beautiful! There are also many incredibly museums that are completely free, which wasn’t the case anywhere else in Europe that I visited! Definitely make a “bucket list” of things you’re interested in/want to do, you won’t regret it!

What was your most valuable experience abroad? When looking back on all my wonderful experiences in London, it is difficult to pick just one as my most valuable and unforgettable experience. In my classes, I found the field trips to be very educational and engaging, stepping outside of Faraday House to physically see artwork, historical buildings, and museums to better understand what we were learning in class. In ENG 320 (Interpreting Shakespeare), we got to see live performances every other week of the Shakespeare plays we were reading in class. Seeing shows was something I really wanted to do in London, so it was really fun and interesting to watch all the performances, and it even helped me create my final presentation on my own production of The Comedy of Errors.

What would you say to students undecided about studying abroad? This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience! You make so many amazing friends, experience so much, and learn in a way you won’t on campus. Abroad makes you feel so independent and confident in yourself! I learned things about myself I never knew before, and that would not have happened if not for abroad.

What advice would you give to a student studying abroad? Besides the basics, like making sure you have cord converters, proper currency, and a carry-on bag that fits European airplane standards, I would say to go in with an open-mind! Be prepared for and excited about meeting new people. I went into my semester knowing only one other person in the program but ended up meeting tons of new people and making some lifelong friends! Also take advantage of all of the school-offered experiences and opportunities, like plays, day-trips/excursions, and Town Hall Tuesdays.

What was your most valuable experience abroad? I had the amazing opportunity of studying at Shakespeare’s Globe and performing on the stage as well! It was truly an experience I will never forget and I am so grateful for the experience. There is so much history around the globe and many great actors have performed on that stage and now I am able to say I did too. I also got to work with amazing Professors from all around the world who had so much more knowledge to add to my toolbox of practices I didn’t even know existed! Not only the surreal opportunity of performing and studying at the globe, but also just being able to explore the world!

What would you say to a student undecided about going abroad? For students who are undecided I would say talk to a few people who have already gone abroad so that you can get different perspectives on what the experience will be like. I will also say do research on the countries you might be interested in to see what their social culture, weather and traditions are like to see which best aligns with who you are as a person or the types of things you want to explore.

What advice would you give a student studying abroad? Take advantage of all the free things to do in London! Many museums are free to enter and have so many interesting things to do. Also, there are so many fun neighborhoods to explore and parks to walk through. I would also recommend trying to venture out of London at least once. My friend and I visited the white cliffs of Dover and saw lots of cows and sheep and went on a gorgeous hike! It was an easy hour-long train ride out of the city. Finally, London has so many food options to try from all around the world! My favorites to try were Thai and Indian food. The food markets are worth checking out as well, such a fun outing!

What was your most valuable experience abroad? The Syracuse London trip to Lockerbie was my most memorable experience of going abroad. Over the course of the weekend, I learned about the events of the Pam Am 103 air disaster and how it affected those in the town of Lockerbie. I also learned about the Syracuse students on the plane who lost their life, and whose families have sustained connections with those living in Lockerbie. I was able to meet and speak with people who were on the ground the night the plane crashed. Hearing their stories in addition to a first responder’s had a profound impact on me and my understanding of what had happened.

What was your most valuable experience abroad? The experience I had visiting Lockerbie, Scotland. Prior to my visit to Lockerbie, my knowledge of the plane crash was minimal. However, after attending the Lockerbie trip, I learned how much it impacted their community and but additionally Syracuse’s community. We met many individuals who were present during the crash and were able to share their testimonies.

What advice would you give to a student studying abroad? Always be curious and always be ready to experience new things. The outside world is very different from the “world” within the US boundary. What advice would you give to a student studying abroad? Studying abroad can be a valuable and unforgettable experience for many individuals. It provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in a different culture, develop cross-cultural communication skills, and gain a broader perspective on global issues. Additionally, studying abroad can be an excellent way to become more independent and self-reliant, as you end up navigating unfamiliar environments and engaging with people from different backgrounds. Overall, studying abroad allowed me to grow as a person independently and I noticed how strong I was. It is a transformative experience that has a positive impact on one’s personal and professional development.

It is ok to stay back a weekend and explore the city you are studying in. Some of my favorite weekends were weekends I stayed back in London. What was your most valuable experience abroad? My most valuable experience while I was abroad in London was my internship. I interned at AMWA Designs, a small homeware company, and worked one-on-one with the founder. The SU London internship team was extremely helpful in finding me the right internship and being there throughout the semester for any advice. My internship allowed me to gain valuable skills in a global workplace which I would not have been able to do had I not gone abroad. My internship also allowed me to fall in love with London more and experience things I would not have come across on my own. This included traveling outside of Central London to my boss’ neighborhood which gave me a wider perspective of London and see new communities. I was also able to learn more about London through the people who live there by attending meetings, going to a wallpaper printing factory, and attending local events on behalf of my boss; particularly at the events I was able to network with professionals and learn more about the creative industries of London.

What advice would you give to a student studying abroad? I would tell a student to make sure they do their research. I did a significant amount of research before I went abroad however I still was not expecting many things to be that different. I was wrong. Almost everything was different. For example, I mainly rely on amazon for my products but when I was abroad, I realized that amazon did not deliver as fast as in the states and the products were different.

What was your most valuable experience abroad? I went to London in Spring 2023. Since I took 16 credits of courses, I was excited to experience the course load that has history of London and London’s special aspects integrated into it. All the courses were relevant and it was super helpful to see all the connections that classes had to London or the United Kingdom. I also got to work at Clifton Interiors, a high end residential interior design firm, and this was a great opportunity for me to learn real life skills and make valuable connections.

What was your most unforgettable experience abroad? The most valuable/ unforgettable experience in my host country was having tea time with one of my professors and a few friends. A few friends and I hosted a tea time with our black London professor where we made tea and she brought cakes, pastries, and cookies and we sat a chatted for 3 hours about anything and everything. It was a really good way for us to bond with our professor and we had a really good time learning about London’s perspective from her point of view. At one point our conversation shifted into random topics that had us laughing for the longest, but nonetheless, we really enjoyed sharing that moment with our professor!

What advice would you give to a student studying abroad? My advice to any student before going abroad is to make the most of every single day and write things down. Your semester abroad goes by so quickly. I felt like I just got to London and then I blinked and I was going home. I did my best to make the most of every day by exploring the city during my free time and trying a new activity or going to a new place whenever I could. Despite doing all of those things, I wish I took the time to write down what I did. Many of my friends had journals that they wrote in every day. I personally could not get into journaling but now that I am home, I wish I had. I wish I could forever remember every moment of my study abroad. It truly is the most amazing time in your life, you may only do it once, so it would be really nice to have something to look back on once you are home.

What would you tell a student undecided about studying abroad? I was undecided to study abroad because I never traveled outside the country before, and especially not alone. I was afraid I would have no help in housing or adapting to life abroad, but after seeking out help from the study abroad advisors, I realized that there is an abundance of resources that the program offers to make the process easier to handle.

What would you tell a student undecided about studying abroad? If you are someone who is undecided about their major while studying abroad, my advice would be to take advantage of the many amazing classes that Syracuse Abroad has to offer. Pick classes that you are interested in, and ones that are potentially in the majors that you are thinking about. Whether it’s psychology, sociology, history, or something else, these classes will give you a better idea of what you like and don’t like. If you don’t have a major in mind and just want to study abroad, I would say to definitely look into taking courses that interest you and not to stress about the major.

What was your most unforgettable experience abroad? The most valuable experience I had in London was going to Tate Britain’s excellent show of the talented figurative painter
Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, “Fly in League with the Night”. The way in which her paintings depict black figures was something I had never experienced before, and a book of her poems and writings inspired me in the same manner. Yiadom-Boakye wrote “Blackness has never been other to me. Therefore, I’ve never felt the need to explain its presence in the world.”

You can make the experience your own. You can travel as much or as little as you’d like to. What was your most valuable experience abroad? My most valuable experience in London was invariably my trip to Lockerbie, Scotland to discuss the tragedy of the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing with some of its victims and their families. I have never experienced a more beautiful moment of connection and grief than I did that weekend, and I have never felt prouder to be a Syracuse student. We are forever tied to the families of Lockerbie, and I was honored to hear their stories firsthand and to give them reassurance that we were not allowing the event to be forgotten. It is so important to connect with locals wherever you go abroad; however, I feel particularly blessed to have shared in commemoration and in mourning with such incredible people. Not every moment abroad must be happy to be beautiful, and that weekend certainly was.

What was your most memorable experience abroad? My most valuable experience was being able to see the musical The Little Big Things. I was able to see a show on stage that is exactly the type of production I want to work on in the future, and in a system that didn’t break my bank to be able to see it. As a theatre management major, I learned so much from seeing so many shows and exploring the different financial structure of theatre in London, and that was incredibly valuable for me in my learning.

They welcome new students to these countries every semester and have the tools and resources to help you through every part of your semester. If you do the London semester GO ON EVERY TRIP! If you are worried about travel around the UK and Europe, going on trips organized by Syracuse London is a great way to do that in a low-stakes environment. What was your most unforgettable experience abroad? My time in London was truly transformative, but the pinnacle of this experience was performing on the incredible stage that is Shakespeare’s Globe. During my time abroad, I was delved into the exploration of my voice, movement, and use of text. Throughout the semester, we prepared a shortened version of Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’. Our work drew inspiration from the lessons and activities we explored in class together as an ensemble. When the day of the showcase came around, I felt more prepared than ever to navigate the unique stage using the efforts I had prepared, and comfortable commanding space in front of an audience. Studying at The Globe was the opportunity of a lifetime, and I’ll cherish it for the rest of my life.

What was your most unforgettable experience abroad? There were so many wonderful experiences I had in the UK. In the architecture school’s trip to Scotland, I saw the Edinburgh old town. In my own trip to Seven sister Cliff, I saw the shinning white cliff covered in waving green fields. In London, so many art institutions and museums are free to visit and have fantastic Friday Late events, while those flee markets like the Jubilee market or Portobello market full with vintages and strange but delicate goods. Among all these experience, the most valuable for me were those field trips I had in history class & survey class. Instead of sitting inside a classroom, in London, students have chances to see the history of London in their own eyes. I really enjoyed seeing the ancient Roman wall remains surrounded by Brutalism concrete High rises in Barbican, or wandering around the Chiswick Garden.
